Ivohoa, Victoria, Australia
A compact and highly functional outbuilding in Ivanhoe, Australia, designed to serve as both a self-contained studio flat and a workshop below — offering flexible use for living, working, and making within a lush garden setting.
The building responds to the sloped site by integrating the workshop on the lower ground floor, with the studio above benefitting from elevated views and access to outdoor space. This vertical arrangement allows both units to maintain independence while fitting seamlessly into the existing rear garden.
The architecture takes inspiration from Melbourne’s contemporary vernacular, with a galvanised metal roof, minimalist detailing, and a quiet material palette that harmonises with the surrounding greenery. Generous glazing connects the interior to the outdoors while maintaining privacy and natural ventilation.
Carefully considered and compactly designed, the project provides a sustainable and elegant solution for multi-functional living — blending utility, comfort, and architectural clarity in a suburban backyard.
