Canary Wharf
A calm and refined living and kitchen space designed in the spirit of Japandi principles — a harmonious blend of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian warmth. This project creates a multifunctional environment that is both visually serene and deeply functional, perfectly suited to contemporary living.
At the heart of the kitchen is a dual-aspect layout, offering two modes of use: when closed, the kitchen presents as a minimal, slim-lined unit that blends seamlessly with the surrounding joinery; when open, it transforms into a fully functional workshop-style space for serious cooking. This duality allows for both calm presence and dynamic activity within the same architectural frame.
For this floor plan layout, the premise was to interconnect the different spaces visually. Through the design of open and expansive zones, a visual dialogue was created between kitchen, dining, and living areas — allowing the spaces to flow into one another while maintaining a sense of identity and intimacy. The material palette, centred around light-toned woods, clean lines, and soft textures, reinforces the Japandi sensibility of simplicity, honesty, and warmth.
We developed and tested multiple layout options, each considering sightlines, light quality, and user interaction. These were presented to the client and refined collaboratively to arrive at the optimal configuration tailored to their personal routines and aesthetic preferences.
This project is a testament to the power of thoughtful, layered minimalism — where flexibility, tranquillity, and design precision coexist to support a more intentional way of living.
